The "ME" Show

My wife and I attend a church where no one will fess up to having musical talent. Our first Sunday, we sat in the third row, and when we started singing the first hymn, we seriously thought the rest of the congregation decided to sneak out and leave us singing by ourselves. When I turned around, I saw all the seats still full and no one singing.

Every year, we have a Christmas program. It usually involves dinner and a few musical numbers. As you can guess, music options are a little sparce. Someone found out my wife and I can sing (although my wife is MUCH better than I am) and that we can't say no.

Last year, either one or both of us were involved in every single song. This year is the same story (except for one song that will be performed by all the kids). Our main concern is that people are going to think we volunteered for this. I think I would rather watch every episode of Barney the dinosaur or deal with the flu every day in the month of December than sing this much in public.

Thankfully, I married a girl who oozes musical talent. As a result, she can cover me up pretty well and no one will listen to me too closely. I also have to keep reminding myself that everyone listening is just grateful it's not them up on stage.

Ahh yes...the "grateful it's not me up there" moments in life. Reminds of times when a speaker goes a little blank and says too many "ums." I just smile to myself and say, better you than me, buddy. Better you than me.

hahahaha...I need to go to this Christmas party and make snide comments to those around me about how attention loving you must be!

i think your ward probably doesn't mind hearing you all sing- especially if it means they don't have to be the ones performing.

good luck!

It's true that is what we are thinking...us non musical people that is. We are grateful for people like you...very grateful!

I'm glad you cleared it up that you didn't volunteer, cuz in our old ward there were a few people that LOVED for everyone to hear their musical talents. So every few weeks they'd do musical numbers; they'd always sing the loudest in sacrament; etc. Seriously this one couple was so loud we started sitting on a different side of the chapel :-).

Dun, If only we had a few of those. It might take some of the heat off us.

You can bet that I'm going to be sitting there, rolling my eyes and commenting that I am so tired of listening to Nathan and Krystal at every single ward function where there's a microphone and a stage. If you want, I'll talk to our chorister and see if she will let you in on the primary songs too. You could play Mary and Joseph and you could even supply the baby. It's clearly all about the Walch's and the rest of us are just along so that you have an audience.
